Lawrence E. Beard Named Deputy Comptroller for Licensing

WASHINGTON — Lawrence E. Beard has been named Deputy Comptroller for Licensing, succeeding Steve Weiss, who plans to retire from the OCC.

"Steve is a true professional in every sense of the word and he will be greatly missed," said Julie L. Williams, First Senior Deputy Comptroller and Chief Counsel. "However, I am very pleased that we were able to find someone as qualified as Larry Beard to take his place. Larry has served the OCC very ably in a number of challenging positions and brings a wealth of experience in supervising large and small banks and superb team-building skills."

In his new position, Mr. Beard will oversee the overall licensing function in OCC's Washington D.C. headquarters and its four district offices.

Mr. Beard is a commissioned national bank examiner and a 30-year OCC veteran. Among other positions, he has served at Headquarters in Special Supervision and Financial Management and as Field Manager in Illinois. Since 1997, he has been the Assistant Deputy Comptroller for the St. Louis Field Office. He is a graduate of Rockhurst College, Kansas City, MO.

Mr. Weiss joined the OCC in 1979. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College and earned a Masters Degree in Economics from Harvard University. Over his 25-year career, he directed the first National Treatment Study for the Department of Treasury, and served as Director of Strategic Analysis. He has been the Deputy Comptroller in charge of the OCC's licensing functions for the past 20 years.
