Overview

Residential real estate lending, which comprises loans for purchasing properties designed to house one-to-four families; refinancing loans used to purchase such properties; and extending closed-end loans and open-end lines of credit secured by the borrower's equity in residential real estate. This booklet provides an overview of residential real estate lending and addresses associated risks, risk management practices, and regulatory requirements. This booklet does not address the origination of mortgages for sale; refer to the "Mortgage Banking" booklet of the Comptroller's Handbook for information on that topic.

Applicability

This booklet applies to the OCC's supervision of national banks and federal savings associations. References to national banks in this booklet also generally apply to federal branches and agencies of foreign banking organizations. Refer to 12 USC 3102(b) and the "Federal Branches and Agencies Supervision" booklet of the Comptroller's Handbook for more information.
